Some schools have developed programs for warehouse workers, due to the growing demand for education specifically on logistics. Companies want them to understand the impact their jobs have on their customers and how their work in one department can impact activities at other locations according to Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
The degree options are varied, but most include the foundation courses that introduce basic concepts, including operations and supply chain management procurement, transportation, distribution networks warehouses and inventory management, and business fundamentals. Some universities also offer specializations including e-commerce and retail logistics, transportation and logistical analysis Global Logistics Management and others.
Graduates can be employed in roles as logisticians, supply chain managers purchasing agents industrial production managers and distribution managers. They can also seek certifications like the Certified Supply Chain Manager or the Certified Public Contract Manager to increase their chances of success in their careers.
In addition to the course offerings be sure to consider whether the university is accredited by a governing body such as the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, which recognizes 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. Find a school that has high student-to-teacher ratios, as it will ensure that you receive a top-quality education.
Some colleges offer online or hybrid programs that combine classroom instruction with virtual learning opportunities. This type of program is popular with employees who have the flexibility of their schedules and are not able or unwilling to attend traditional classes. Some online-only programs offer associate degrees or certificates in addition to master’s or bachelor’s degrees.
